Commentary
The leaders come straight out to try and improve their times, but little changes at first. Barrichello improves to ninth, and Fisichella spins.
Ten minutes in, Hakkinen closes to 0.066s of Coulthard's time, and posts his intent for the session, whilst Herbert and Salo set about improving their standings too. The BAR's have been going well in both sessions, whenever they are out, running 3rd and 4th at 45 minutes in - Zonta is looking as impressive as Villeneuve. Some strong runs by Diniz, probably due to working on qualifying setups, are making Sauber look strong.
Takagi's engine blew around fifteen minutes in, and Salo went off shortly afterwards - his day is over after 32 laps, but he did well to be in fifth place, just 0.4s off Irvine when it happened.
The second session stayed lively, with places changing all over, and Hakkinen swapping places with Coulthard at the top of the timesheets consistently. Damon Hill posted a quick time, then span, but demonstrated he's on the pace when he's on the tarmac this weekend; Frentzen is right behind him, so it's promising for Jordan this weekend... although Frentzen then stopped on the pit straight!
Ten minutes from the end, Hakkinen went quickest (by 0.051s), just before Wurz span, crashing heavilly into the barriers. He returned unharmed to the pits - unlike the car!
In the closing minutes, fast times were posted by Zanardi (into 8th), Barrichello (into 5th), Gene and Badoer (into 16th and 14th - excellent for Minardi). Then Alesi went 4th, ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Villeneuve and Hill, pushing Irvine into 8th.
In the dying seconds, credit goes to Hill for finding a way through traffic (as Irvine gives up and pits) to post the third quickest time today, then the top time ahead of both McLarens (where did that come from?), as the McLarens pit - there's life in that old dog, yet!
