Commentary
The second session continued pretty much where the first left off. The McLarens continued to impress, swapping lead times again, with Johnny Herbert looking very strong too. Irvine pulled closer to the front, finally pressuring the McLaren's despite off track excursions.
Damon Hill, as in both sessions yesterday, spent time off the black stuff; this time keeping him from improving his time from the first session. Fisichella put in some excellent work, showing Wurz how to do it in front of the Austrian's home crowd... and Luca Badoer failed to capitalise on his excellent first session by falling off the track, and staying there.
Salo continued to improve, moving into the midfield, but remained a full second off Irvine's pace. At the close of the session, he really moved up the order as the car and track came to him.
In the death, Barrichello posted his best time of the morning, closing to 0.6s of Herbert (there's a change from the norm), putting him ahead of an improving Frentzen, while Hakkinen put in a quick time, but it not an improvement. The session closed in languid fashion...
Prognosis for qualifying, later, is a brilliant session in prospect: with the McLarens leading the field, and nothing to choose between Hakkinen and Coulthard, and Irvine improving and looking better all the time, they are the top contenders. But, as the results of this practice indicate, if someone gets their balance actually right, then whoever they are, they can post a top time...
