Brief Commentary

The session started slowly, with drivers being cautious starting timed laps, despite the sunny conditions.

Johnny Herbert set the early pace, before the McLaren's came out ten minutes in and dominated the timesheets, immediately over a second quicker than the rest. Irvine and Salo also come out, but are not quite so quick to get on the pace.

The Prosts looked good from the first half session, with Trulli quicker than Irvine; however times for all drivers drop rapidly... except Takagi, who spun out of the session at half time!

Thirty minutes in, Jean Alesi swerves around the slowing Arrows of Pedro de la Rosa, and loses control, crashing badly. The session is red flagged; medics rush to the scene, and Alesi appears to escape intact - unlike his car.

When the red flag is withdrawn, most of the drivers come out for a last run. Irvine overcooks it and spins, as the McLarens set impressive times. Irvine's session ends with ten minutes remaining...

Wurz moves from 18th to 9th, indicating how times are improving, though mostly the back markers are finding time. Noone has threatened the McLarens yet.

Five minutes remain, and Frentzen, Barrichello and Hill set quick times, moving to third, fourth and sixth. Salo is not making much impression, and Zanardi has moved up to eleventh.

The session ends relatively quietly, with Zonta running into the tyre wall, the resulting yellows preventing anyone improving their times.
