FIA Press Release
Free practice, 9.00 to 11.00
Weather conditions: very hot and sunny
Ferraris set the pace
The Ferrari F399s of Michael Schumacher (1m 40.424s) and Eddie Irvine (1m 40.506s) set first and second fastest time in this morning's free practice session, both drivers reporting themselves very satisfied with the feel of their cars and were using the latest type 048C engines. Michael used one set of tyres and Eddie three in order to complete comparative tests. "The car works well in every sector of the lap," said Schumacher.
McLarens third and fifth
The McLaren-Mercedes of Mika Hakkinen (1m 41.107s) and David Coulthard (1m 41.269s) wound up third and fifth fastest. "We are still trying to adapt the set-up to the changing track conditions," said Coulthard, "and we've still got a bit more work to do." Ron Dennis added; "It's going to be very tight this afternoon and the it is a fine balance between the two available tyre compounds."
Herbert fourth for Stewart
Johnny Herbert posted fourth fastest time (1m 41.111s) in his Stewart-Ford SF3, spending most of the session trying to eliminate understeer on the high speed corners. Rubens Barrichello (7th/1m 41.608s) was not happy with the feel of his tyres this morning.
Villeneuve a satisfied sixth
Jacques Villeneuve was a satisfied sixth on 1m 41.560s with his British American 01, despite a touch too much oversteer on the high speed corners. Ricardo Zonta (13th/1m 42.578s) was much happier with his car today but lost valuable time with a spin.
Alesi's Sauber eighth
Jean Alesi wound up eighth (1m 42.042s) in his Sauber-Petronas, the car's aerodynamic balance being improved during the course of the session thanks to a set-up change. Pedro Diniz (12th/1m 42.473s) had a couple of spins into the gravel, one of which damaged his car's front wing.
Briefly
Ralf Schumacher (9th/1m 42.153s) and Alex Zanardi (17th/1m 43.108s) both struggled with poor handling balance on their Williams FW21s. Heinz-Harald Frentzen (10th/1m 42.282s) and Damon Hill (15th/1m 42.861s) were also struggling to work out a good set-up, their Jordan 199s losing time particularly in the second sector of the lap. Hill had a harmless spin. Giancarlo Fisichella (11th/1m 42.292s) and Alexander Wurz (14th/1m 42.755s) went in the wrong direction on chassis set-up with their Benetton-Playlifes and complained of dire lack of grip.
