FIA Press Release
Warm-up, 09.30 to 10.00
Weather conditions: hot and sunny
Hakkinen and Coulthard 1-2 for McLaren
The McLaren-Mercedes of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard set first and second fastest times in the warm-up, 0.297sec apart, and both drivers reported they were feeling very confident with their MP4/14s. Rear suspension modifications have been incorporated following Coulthard's pushrod failure which pitched him into a spin during yesterday morning's free practice session. Coulthard did one lap in the spare car just to check it out while the team remained tight-lipped over its refuelling strategy for the race. It is believed that it will be a close call between a two and three stop strategy for both McLaren and key rivals Ferrari.
Schumacher's Ferrari third
Michael Schumacher set third fastest time for Ferrari, taking two stints in the spare F399 after his race car suffered a throttle problem. "We will complete the final set-up depending on the final temperature closer to the start of the race," he said. Schumacher also tried two different front wing set-ups while Eddie Irvine (5th) assessed a different front anti-roll bar.
Alesi takes fourth for Sauber
Jean Alesi set fourth fastest time in his Sauber-Petronas. "I am happy with the car but I think things will be difficult for us at the start," he said. Pedro Diniz (10th) preferred the set-up of his spare car and will transfer its settings to his race car prior to the start.
Jordans sixth and eighth
Damon Hill and Heinz-Harald Frentzen were sixth and eighth fastest this morning. "It is the usual story," said Hill, "we have a very good car set-up for the race, but we have to make up for our grid positions." Frentzen spent most of the session doing pit stop practice and was not trying for any quick times.
Briefly:
Williams Technical Director Patrick Head said "we have had quite a promising morning" after Ralf Schumacher and Alex Zanardi set ninth and 16th fastest times...Jacques Villeneuve's British American 01 stopped on the circuit with a slight hydraulic problem but he was happy with his race car after setting 11th fastest time. Mika Salo (19th) lost time with an oil leak. The Benetton-Playlife team had a frustrating time, Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz setting 14th and 18th fastest time respectvely. "The car has no grip in race trim and was understeering and oversteering all the time," said Fisichella.
