FIA Press Release

Free practice, 13.00 to 14.00
Weather conditions: sunny and bright

McLaren-Mercedes stay fastest
Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard retained the fastest two positions in the provisional line-up, although neither improved on their morning times in their McLaren MP4/14s. Twenty seven minutes into the session Coulthard crashed heavily on the fast sequence of ess-bends behind the paddock, spinning backwards into the tyre barrier. The car shed its rear wing and left front wheel in the impact and is currently being stripped down in preparation for an overnight rebuild. "There is never a small shunt in F1," he said. "I think a tyre clipped a kerb and I didn't have enough room to recover. The car will be fixed for tomorrow when I expect a great battle for pole position." Both Hakkinen and Coulthard remained on their original sets of tyres to the end of the day.

Schumacher third for Ferrari
Michael Schumacher retained third fastest time on 1m 42.215s but Eddie Irvine slumped to tenth overall as he was running a heavy fuel load in his Ferrari. "Don't worry for Irvine, tomorrow is another day," joked Michael. There are four type 048C specification engines available this weekend and both race cars will be equipped with them tomorrow, the spare cars using 048B units.

Barrichello up to fourth
Rubens Barrichello (1m 42.529s) used new rubber to move up to fourth place in his Stewart-Ford SF3. "We've made quite a big step forward on the set-up," said the Brazilian. Johnny Herbert (20th/1m 44.179s) reported that he had never seen Suzuka so slippery and dusty. Late in the session he went out on new tyres but stopped on his out lap when a warning sensor cut out the engine.

Zanardi vaults to fifth
A set of new tyres enabled Alex Zanardi to vault his Williams FW21 to fifth fastest time on 1m 42.718s. Both the Italian and his team-mate Ralf Schumacher (11th/1m 43.399s) still complained their FW21s were oversteering too much and made more changes to the set-up in an effort to improve their grip.

Briefly
Olivier Panis (6th/1m 42.925s) found his Prost-Peugeot completely transformed when he switched to new tyres. Giancarlo Fisichella (7th/1m 42.953s) wound up five places ahead of his Benetton-Playlife team-mate Alexander Wurz (1m 43.430s). Jacques Villeneuve reported himself very happy with the feel of his British American 01 (8th/1m 43.047s). Heinz-Harald Frentzen (9th/1m 43.235s) reported that "grip levels were a lot lower than last year" while Damon Hill (16th/1m 43.720s) could not work out a decent balance. Frentzen lost his fastest lap due to straight-lining the chicane.
