Weather conditions: sunny and bright
Schumacher sets Ferrari pace
Michael Schumacher set the pace this morning in his Ferrari F399 on 1m 39.085s, using a set of new tyres at the end of the session and reporting that he was "rather happy" with the feel of his car. Eddie Irvine (12th/1m 40.667s) finished the session extremely frustrated, grappling with set-up problems which saw him slide off the road three times and he also had his best time disallowed for straight-lining the chicane.
McLarens second and seventh
Mika Hakkinen (2nd/1m 39.579s) and David Coulthard (7th/1m 40.377s) ran a single set of new tyres each during the course of the session. Hakkinen spent much of the session grappling to dial out understeer while Coulthard's mechanics had a busy time earlier in the morning when his car's engine seized when it was being warmed up prior to the session, necessitating a hurried change. Coulthard's car also had a minor sensor problem in the mid-session break but this was rectified without delay.
Herbert third for Stewart
Johnny Herbert's Stewart-Ford wound up third fastest on 1m 40.134s after he fitted new tyres in the closing stages of the session, as did his team-mate Rubens Barrichello (6th/1m40.334s) Herbert reported that the rear end problems he'd complained about on Friday had been improved and Rubens also said his car had better grip.
Jordans fourth and fifth
The Jordan Mugen-Hondas of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (1m 40.139s) and Damon Hill (1m 40.175s) set fourth and fifth fastest times this morning, both drivers reporting that they were very happy with the cars' balance. Frentzen also managed to save a lot of tyres for qualifying and the race. Both race chassis and the spare car will be fitted with the latest uprated version of the Mugen-Honda V10 for qualifying only.
Briefly
Jarno Trulli (8th/1m 40.535s) was much happier with the balance of his Prost-Peugeot which will use the latest EVO7 specification engine this afternoon. Ralf Schumacher (9th/1m 40.570s) clipped a kerb and spun at high speed, but managed to bring his Williams FW21 to rest without any damage. Alex Zanardi was still struggling with set up and wound up 14th on 1m 41.363s. Giancarlo Fisichella (13th/1m 41.001s) reported that the balance of his Benetton-Playlife did not feel bad but he was still having problems in the slower corners. Team-mate Alexander Wurz (15th/1m 41.562s) still had a grip problem and said at one point he was balked by Michael Schumacher's Ferrari.
