A soggy morning again at Silverstone. The only difference today is that the circuit has closed all car parks to motorists, hence the home of British Motorsport is virtually deserted as confused fans are turned away from the gate. Perhaps Eddie Irvine summed it up best, commenting "It's a disaster for everyone."
While fans will get their money back, their Easter holiday weekend will have been ruined. As for Silverstone - one assumes they are insured.
Anyway, back to the action on the track… Michael Schumacher soon set the pace in his Ferrari after 10 minutes from Heinz-Harald Frentzen, with a lap of 1:36.942. Johnny Herbert was the first driver to spin, then Button and then Eddie Irvine at Priory who hit Button's stationary BMW Williams. Scratch three Brits on home 'soil'
Mika Hakkinen showed how it should be done moments later taking the fastest time of 1:36.290 in his McLaren Mercedes. Heinz-Harald Frentzen immediately threw down the wet weather gauntlet, lapping in 1:35.131, then Rubens Barrichello with the first lap in the 1 minute 34s with a time of 1:34.889. At this stage of the third practice session, no less than 10 seconds covered the field with Just Giancarlo Fisichella had yet to take to take to the circuit. Rubens Barrichello has been talking up his chances should Silverstone prove to be wet. Wet it is and Michael Schumacher responded to Barrichello's best lap some nine minutes later to take the fastest time [1:34.385] while brother Ralf Schumacher moved the surviving BMW Williams up to third position.
Mika Hakkinen hit back bumping both Ferrari's from the top of the timesheets with a very impressive lap, some seven-tenths faster than his main rivals with a lap time of 1:33.694. David Coulthard followed his team-mate's lead taking the second fastest time after 37 minutes. Ricardo Zonta had a quick spin in his BAR Reynard. The team believe they have solved his wishbone problem that saw him crash out They have replaced the carbon component with steel… Next spinner was Michael Schumacher, but the German recovered and returned to the pits.
Meanwhile, David Coulthard had improved his best lap time on a drying track [1:33.614], while Pedro Diniz crashed out from 9th in his Sauber Petronas. A scrappy session in all, but it does seem to indicate that McLaren have got the handle on their wet weather setup.
